The Kenya Methodist University (KEMU) has started a Microfinance degree course.
Microfinance has now become an industry, fostering access to financial services and providing avenues for job creation, economic participation and poverty alleviation. The growing market for microfinance services comes with challenges of quality management and capacity to deliver. The B.Sc. Microfinance degree in KEMU seeks to prepare students with enhanced human resource capacities for entry into the fast growing and dynamic financial services sector. This programme aims at instilling relevant and broad based social and micro-enterprise skills to students to equip them better in solving challenging social problems.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME The programme is dedicated to building both financial skills and social capital understanding, and helping students to find a balance between these two important aspects of sustainable microfinance. It aims to; • Develop capacity for those devoted to microfinance and development and in the practice of microfinance/microbanking • Provide theoretical knowledge of microfinance management, practical and analytical tools, together with foundational skills to enable practise at a higher level in industry, research and education • Enable fresh students to access opportunities in emerging microfinance/banking industry and for mature students to acquire new skill sets as well as benefit from the option of earning academic qualifications that link them to executive positions in the work place • To equip students with empowerment knowledge, practical and analytical tools, and understanding for solving social problems of our times in our localities
